A Tribute to My Christian Mother
Who can find a virtuous woman? for her price is far above rubies. – Proverbs 31:10
My Christian mother was faithful to bring up her seven children in the knowledge of the Lord. She was the granddaughter of a Methodist minister, so she knew something of what it meant to be a Christian. Although she always wanted to be a Christian, and she would try each day not to sin, before the day was over, she had always failed. When her brother received salvation and she heard about a way to live without sin, she prayed for that experience. The Lord saved her, washed away her sins, and gave her victory. From that time on, she set her face toward Heaven and never wavered from serving the Lord.
What a wonderful privilege I had to be raised in that home! Even though at times we were poverty-stricken and had many serious illnesses, my mother kept her trust in God. In my teenage years when I rebelled against her teachings, she remained faithful in praying for me. How thankful I am that she did!
Having a Christian mother is a privilege, and it also brings a challenge. My mother taught her children to do what was right and lived an example before us, and so the challenge to us was to follow her example and pass it on to our own sons and daughters. The Bible says that to whom much is given, much is required, and I know that much is required of those who have faithful Christian mothers.
All of my mother’s children gave their lives to the Lord. Now my mother is in Heaven, along with my father, a brother, and a sister. She lived to be one hundred years old, and died in the faith. I truly thank God for my Christian mother!
Today, are we handing the message of the Gospel down to those under our influence? Are we praying they will wholeheartedly follow God? It’s a valuable legacy to pass along.
