Can two walk together, except they be agreed? – Amos 3:3
Most likely, we all have agreements and disagreements every day in one form or another. My wife and I started buying Entertainment Books a while ago, which has become a source of some disagreement. The books are full of coupons for dining out, usually offering a dollar amount off your ticket, and they have many restaurants that we have never even heard of. My wife likes to eat at restaurants where she has never been; I like to eat at the same place pretty much all the time.
We used to live in a town with a restaurant called the Cracker Barrel. I loved going there because you could eat breakfast for dinner, and it was really good. My wife, however, did not always care to go there. She was not in agreement with me on that. But when we go to the restaurants whose names I cannot even pronounce, I am not in agreement with her, although I am thankful to get a certain amount off the bill through our coupons.
Being human, it is inevitable that our relationships with each other will result in disagreements at times, and we will need to make some compromises. However, God wants us to have a relationship of total agreement with Him. This is only possible when we realize that His ways are higher than our ways, and agree to submit our wills completely to His. If God asks us to do something and we say no, then disagreement comes in and our walk with Him suffers. As our focus verse indicates, we must submit to God’s ways to walk with Him.
Think about what kind of walk we would have with the Lord if our agreement was less than perfect, if we offered our consecrations to Him but held back a little bit. Is a little disagreement okay? The Apostle John said, “If we say that we have fellowship with him, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not the truth” (1 John 1:6). If we walk in disagreement with the Lord, we are walking in darkness. That is not the kind of walk we want to have.
We live in a time when there is disagreement all around us. It is not uncommon to hear analysts on the news say, “We’ll just have to agree to disagree.” Yet when it comes to God’s Word, we cannot agree to disagree. We have to be in total agreement with God’s Word as it is, and then we will have fellowship with Him and with one another.
