Delight thyself also in the Lord; and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart. – Psalm 37:4
When my husband and I lived in our first home, we had a small plaque hanging on the wall that contained the words of today’s focus verse. While doing my household chores, I read those words many times.
I was very happy being a wife, yet after a while I wanted to be a mother. Eventually I began asking God to give me a child, but three long years passed and I still had no baby. I prayed and agonized before the Lord many times about this request. When Mother’s Day came each year, I would feel very sad.
During that time, a minister and his wife needed a place to stay whenever they came to our city, so my husband and I happily invited them to stay with us. After one of their visits, when the couple prayed before leaving for home, they asked God to give me a child. And about a year later, the Lord blessed my husband and me with a son. What joy filled our hearts when our wonderful little boy was born! Although I was not able to give birth to more children, a couple years later God made it possible for us to adopt a beautiful baby girl. What a privilege it was to raise our children and teach them about Jesus!
By delighting ourselves in the work of the Lord, my husband and I made ourselves eligible to receive the promise in today’s focus verse. Opening our home to that minister and his wife was just one of the ways we endeavored to serve God, and we did those things because we loved the Lord and wanted to see the Gospel prosper. In return, God honored us with the desire of our hearts.
God really does answer prayer, and once we have made our honest desire known to Him, we just need to hold on in faith. He is so good! If we keep our hearts right and delight ourselves in Him, He will be faithful to us—His promises are true!
