My voice shalt thou hear in the morning, O Lord; in the morning will I direct my prayer unto thee, and will look up. – Psalm 5:3
When I was growing up on the farm, my mom would often rise before the sun began to shine over the rolling hills. She would silently take a bucket and meander along the drive to the old apple tree sagging under its load. There, she would gather an ample supply of fresh fruit to make warm applesauce for breakfast. I would awake to the sweet smell of cinnamon lingering in the crisp morning air. My mom believed that breakfast was the most important meal of the day, so she always had food ready and waiting for us.
Nutritionists tell us that breakfast is a great boost in starting the day. It gives energy and strength to our rested bodies that lasts throughout the morning. While breakfast is good and much needed, we must not forget to feed our spiritual bodies each morning also. If we begin the early hours with a feast from God’s Word, seasoned with prayer, we will have God’s strength to handle any tough situation that comes our way. We will also keep spiritually fit and healthy.
Have you ever missed breakfast in your rush to work or school? When a body is running on empty, it is hard to perform normal activities. The strength to work is absent. It is the same in our spiritual lives. If we take time each morning to feed on the Scriptures and be filled with the Spirit of the Lord through prayer, our day will be blessed. If not, even small problems may seem more than we can handle.
Are you eating properly? How is your spiritual health? Start the day with the Lord. You will find that one “cup” of His peace and joy as you begin a morning is more effective than a dozen cups of coffee!
