Calling Out for Help
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. – John 3:16
A story is told of a father and his young son walking through the jungles of Peru. The father went ahead cutting a path through the overgrowth with his machete. All of a sudden, the father heard his son cry out for help. He went back and saw a venomous snake slithering away and huge fang marks on his son’s leg. He realized his son would be dead by the time he could carry him to the village, so there was only one thing he could do. He took his dull machete and cut his son’s leg off above the bite. The father loved his son and did what he had to do. The son lived because of that.
That old serpent the devil bit each one of us before we were born. In Romans 5:12 we read, “Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned.” The poison of sin would have killed us, had it not been for our loving Father. Because of His great love for mankind, He did the one thing that could save us: He sent His only begotten Son to die in our place. Romans 5:8 says, “But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.” We can live eternally because of that.
This is the hope and message of the Gospel. There is help for those who are yet poisoned by sin, but haste is needed. We want to spread the good news about sin’s cure. Some people do not realize yet that they have been bitten, and others are postponing taking advantage of the remedy. Maybe today God’s Spirit will use us to help influence someone to find the cure that cost Jesus so much.
That father in Peru heard his son cry out for help and did what was necessary. Our Heavenly Father also hears us when we cry out for help. He has the solution, and that is the cross of Calvary. We can live when we call out to Jesus for help.
