From Riches to Rags
Though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, that ye through his poverty might be rich. – 2 Corinthians 8:9
This holiday season, my husband and I attended a Christmas drama at a local church. The play was about the homeless and how they celebrate Christmas. The point was that they had so little, but still appreciated what Jesus had given up to come to die for them. I thought to myself, I have so much more than they do, but am I really thankful? Or does having more cause me to take for granted some of the basic provisions that truly are blessings? It made me take stock of what Jesus has done for me as an individual. I have been asking the Lord to make me more aware of His goodness so I can better appreciate what He has done.
How many of us would be glad to rise from “rags to riches”? The number is certainly more than those who would be willing to go from riches to rags! If we had that choice, probably we would choose to have the riches, not the poverty. Yet, Jesus did just the opposite for us. Think about it! Jesus had all of Glory at His disposal, but left it to come and save mankind from sin. He knew what He was giving up and what a world of sin He was coming to, and still He chose to come. How can we help but love God when we think of what He has done for us? What a Savior!
Today, may we realize to a fuller degree the sacrifice Jesus made for this world, and all of the blessings that He loads us with daily. He not only paid the high price to redeem our souls, but He cares for our every need and loves us as His own. He is our best Friend in good times and bad, always ready to hear and answer our prayers. As we recognize His goodness, may it cause us all to give back whatever we can to Him, and to look for opportunities to share Him with those around us.
