Get the Living Word
Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God. – Matthew 4:4
Have you witnessed the effects of a timely, well-delivered speech? In the sports arena, we see how a pep talk from Coach can reinvigorate a disheartened team on the verge of defeat. Or consider the energy and enthusiasm speakers generate at a political rally or business seminar. History is also replete with instances when a once-battered and beleaguered company of soldiers was infused with courage and hope by the rallying words of its commander.
The claim that words possess power must hold merit, since institutions the world over pay handsomely for motivational speeches by successful civic or business leaders. Maybe you can cite a personal remembrance of a talk or lecture you heard from a grade-school teacher, a parent, or a minister that had a tremendous life-changing effect on you. Words impact you and me.
When we realize how a mere man’s speech can affect our mental and emotional state, we only begin to grasp what life-giving power the words spoken by God impart to our human hearts. Ponder the Scripture in John 1:1, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” Then read on, “And the Word was made flesh and dwelt among us” (John 1:14). God and His Word are inseparable, and we cannot seek God and the life He gives apart from seeking His Word, which Jesus Christ made accessible to us all by His life and works.
We need to get into the Word, and let it get inside us. It will give us joy, strength, and transforming power! God spoke His intentions and the world came into existence. At Christ’s spoken command dead men came to life, the blind received their sight, and the wind and waves of the sea became calm. Jesus declares, “The words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life” (John 6:63). The next time we open our Bibles to study God’s Word, we can expect that it will have a powerful effect!
