And they shall be mine, saith the Lord of hosts, in that day when I make up my jewels. – Malachi 3:17
Many people in our society like to collect items. Perhaps you have a collection of coins, or small figurines, or hats, or some other item. Maybe you keep your collection on a shelf, in a drawer, in a safe, or in your garage. People enjoy their collections and are proud of them. They often spend a great deal of time researching the history of what they collect, and are very knowledgeable about when, where, and how each piece in their collection was made. We like to talk about our collections, and draw great enjoyment from them.
God also has a collection: He collects people. And like many of us, God also delights in His collection. He enjoys talking about it and taking care of it, and just as we often get excited about new additions to our collections, God is eager to increase His as well. That was His intention when He created the earth—He is continually seeking to bring more people into His collection through salvation. He wants to make us His own so that we can enjoy a wonderful communion with Him.
If we are in God’s collection, we are in a good place. God takes very good care of His collection, protecting it from the dangers in the world. He has already done all the research about each one of us. He knows everything there is to know about us, and cares about us more than we can imagine. You could say that God is “obsessed” with His collection, and we are grateful that He is!
When I consider the privilege it is to be a part of God’s collection, I am amazed and humbled. It is overwhelming to think that you and I can be prized enough to be one of His—one that God draws great joy from. He values you and me enough to desire fellowship with us, and only He can show us what true fellowship is.
Are you part of God’s collection? You can be!
