God’s Flashlight

For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. – 2 Corinthians 4:6

A comic strip portrayed a little boy walking down a country road, hand-in-hand with his mother. The moon was shining overhead at its fullest. A church, partly hidden in the shadows behind them, was closing up for the evening. The little boy suddenly stopped in the semi-darkened lane and pointed up at the moon as he pulled on his mother’s arm. “Mother look!” he exclaimed. “God turned His flashlight on for us to see our way home!”

Flashlights are wonderful tools to have around, especially when the electricity fails. Although they give artificial light, they are still highly valued when no other light is available. To keep flashlights in good working order, we need to periodically change their batteries, putting new energy into the lights to ensure they will not fail us when we really need them.

Similar to the observation of the cartoon character, the truth of the Lord is like a flashlight in this dark world. God’s flashlight, however, is not artificial, and never needs new batteries. His light is always shining, even when the way seems dark. His beam is very powerful and shines brightly over the avenues of the earth’s habitation, looking for those lost in the darkness of sin and crying to be found. Christians have the privilege of walking in the light of God’s Word. His glorious light shines in our hearts, reflecting His love and giving us knowledge of His glory.

The Lord is the Light on a stormy path, dispelling the black of night. He is the Light in the rugged mountains or dark valleys that dissolves the shadows and evaporates the gloom. Step into His light today. Let His brightness and love fill your soul. Let the flashlight of His glory shine like the sun! Then rejoice, for He is the Light of the World. Darkness slips away when He is near.
