God’s Time to Speak

In a dream, in a vision of the night, when deep sleep falleth upon men, in slumberings upon the bed; then he openeth the ears of men. – Job 33:15-16

The passage found in Job 33:14-20 tells us that God reserves for Himself a time to communicate with the souls of men, Christians and sinners alike. It is a time when He can open the ears of men and reveal His instructions. It is a time when He can turn men from their own selfish purposes and separate them from their pride.

My wife and I once visited a family where the mother was concerned about her unsaved children. Upon awaking one morning, one of the children told of a terrible dream he’d had which seemed very real to him. The young man had wanted to have some body piercings, and during the night he dreamed that someone had encircled his entire eyelids with rings. He said it was so alarming it was surreal. I told the mother about the passage in Job and reminded her that God answers prayer in His own way. When we pray for God to speak to hearts, He will be faithful. His timing will be perfect.

This family was also doing some remodeling, and one night, after the contractor had been patching the plaster on one of the walls, the eldest child came home very late. As he walked by that wall, the patch of plaster seemed to glow in the dark and appeared as the face of Jesus. The next morning, the young man related how he could not sleep because of what he saw, and his father suggested to him that the Lord was probably speaking to him.

In my own life, I can remember as a child waking up in the night and going downstairs to see if my mother and father were still in bed, fearing the Lord might have come and taken them. The Lord was speaking to my young heart.

God reserves a time to speak to hearts and to separate men from the conceit of sin long enough to cause them to want to be saved. Many parents are praying for their children, and God continues to speak to those hearts; He is not willing that any should perish. God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Ghost are all working in harmony toward the great end of the salvation of all souls. It will encourage your faith as you read Job’s words. As you pray, God will do the rest.
