Hidden Cracks

Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices. – 2 Corinthians 2:11

The wind whipped down the Columbia River Gorge, hitting our house head on, and I realized that winter had unleashed its fury in full force. The wind gauge on the roof registered each bitter gust while the outside thermometer dipped below the freezing mark. Our furnace chugged along, continually trying to replace heat that the winds stole away through hidden cracks. The hairline holes around the switch plates, electrical outlets, fireplace stones, and windowpanes seemed to pull in the frozen air while, at the same time, whisking the heat away.

As I stood feeling the frosty breeze that the unseen cracks were letting in, I thought about the hairline cracks that might be hidden in the Christian’s spiritual house—the almost invisible areas in life where the devil can seep in and pull away a bit of our faith or leave a seed of doubt behind. The chill from invisible cracks in our earthly homes is most noticeable when the winds are howling through the frozen outdoors. So it is with the cracks in our spiritual house; they are most noticeable when we are going through a full-blown trial with the bitter winds of the devil howling at our door. The force of these winds can weaken us spiritually.

To protect ourselves, we must check carefully and be alert to any problems in our spiritual houses, no matter how small they appear. If we find a split or an opening anywhere, we need to ask the Lord to help us mend it right away, so the devil will have no way of gaining admittance in our hearts.

When we are aware of the devil’s devices, we can take steps to have the Lord fix any area Satan might try to seep through. If we call on the Lord for repairs and work with Him, He will bond every crack with His power and love, making our spiritual houses secure and draft free.
