Never Give Up
I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith. – 2 Timothy 4:7
The violin is a beautiful instrument to look at, as well as to listen to. However, if I picked up my daughter’s instrument and tried to play, I’m sure that the only result of the bow crossing the strings would be horrible screeches. Someone who has studied and practiced the violin, on the other hand, would be able to produce music that would be melodious and delightful, a total contrast to my efforts!
The ability to play well does not come from just desiring to play and then picking up the instrument and hoping beautiful sounds will come out. Quality musicianship comes from hours, days, weeks, months, and years of practice and persistent endurance. Frustration may grip the student, who feels it is too hard to practice any more. Many then give up on their musical journey before they become instrumental artists.
In our walk with the Lord, we must strive to be the best Christians we can be, with God’s help. Like practicing an instrument, it’s not automatic. There are many things that may seem more exciting than spending time in serving the Lord, and those things can distract us from working in His vineyard. But the hours invested for the glory of God will pay off in the end, just as hours of practice pay off for the musician.
When we give our all, loyally attending to the perfect will of God, the “melody” that will rise from our hearts will be as beautiful as that of a magnificent symphony, and the rewards will be even greater. Imagine life forever with the Lord! What price could ever be put on this glorious hope, which will be waiting for us when we finish our earthly course? Let’s purpose in our hearts to keep the faith and never give up in serving the Lord.
Dear Lord, bless those whose wondrous music touches the heart and soul because they never gave up when faced with discouragement. May we, Lord, your servants, be like this also: never wavering or turning back in our walk with You. Amen.
