Note the Furnishings
All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: that the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works. – 2 Timothy 3:16-17
When I was eighteen years old, I decided to get my own place. A friend and I had jobs, so we rented an apartment together. We had all kinds of ideas about the things we would do, the fun we would have, and the great freedom we would enjoy.
It did not take long for us to see how important furnishings are. At Mom and Dad’s house, there was a couch and any number of chairs to sit on. In our apartment, we sat on the floor. It was not nearly as comfortable. Also, Mom’s refrigerator was always full of leftovers and all kinds of goodies to eat. Ours was bare; there was not even a pitcher of water inside!
Thinking back on that situation, it occurs to me that this is a picture of someone living without the Lord. That soul must get by without the fundamentals that make life so much more enjoyable, such as forgiveness for others, contentment, and joy inside our hearts. Without those basics, the soul is empty and bare, and life is miserable.
As the focus verse states, Scripture is where we can go to find the furnishings of peace, strength, healing, wisdom, and every other need we have. These are the things that make our lives full and complete. Salvation is the starting point, and then we simply must look into God’s Word and add the other furnishings He offers. God did not overlook any piece in His plan for our lives—He can make our hearts “perfect” and “throughly furnished.”
As we read the Scriptures, let’s take note of all the furnishings God has made available to those who love Him. We can pray, “Lord, I need something from Your Word today,” and He will supply it. His Spirit will help us to understand and apply His words to our lives. Soon, we will find our lives throughly furnished!
