I will receive you. And will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty. – 2 Corinthians 6:17-18
A few Sundays ago as I was sitting in church, a small boy and his father were sitting in the pew ahead of me. The boy wanted to go sit with his Sunday school teacher and her children, so his father gave him permission. After a while, the teacher left the service with her children, and the boy was left sitting alone. He had apparently found a gummy worm somewhere, which he carried as he slowly made his way back to where his father was sitting. As he approached his father, he was holding the gummy worm at his mouth, ready to taste it. By the way he looked at his father, I could tell he knew he should not be putting it in his mouth. Of course, when his father saw what he was doing, the gummy worm was quickly taken away. His father was watching out for him to make sure he did not eat something that was not good for him.
The incident reminded me of how our Heavenly Father is always watching out for us. He knows what is best for us, and He wants us to check with Him through prayer before we make decisions in our lives.
Just as this boy’s father knew that eating a “not so clean” gummy worm was not good for him, our Father knows what is not good for us. There are times when we want to do things which could be harmful to us, but God warns us not to do such things because He sees the road ahead, and we do not. Although we may not understand exactly why He tells us to let go of these items, we can be sure that His purpose is to protect us.
As we commit our lives to God and read His Word, He will surely guide our lives. He really does know what is best for His children. What a privilege it is to put our trust in Him and let Him lead us!
Thank You, Heavenly Father, for Your faithfulness to guide our lives and to show us Your will. Amen.
