Our Unchanging Lord
Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever. – Hebrews 13:8
The sun was shining brightly, warming the world with its golden rays. What a glorious day to go to church, I thought, as we gathered our Bibles and walked outside. Once in the car, coats were discarded and windows were opened wide. The fragrance of flowers in bloom filtered in along with a mild breeze. My heart was rejoicing in the loveliness of the day.
After driving for a few minutes, I noticed that the sky began to get dark and thick gray clouds covered the sun. The warm air was replaced with a current of cool pressure. Arriving at church, we gathered our coats and Bibles, preparing to make a dash for the doors leading to the sanctuary. A few drops of rain were already splattering on the windshield. The weather had changed quite suddenly.
Living in the Northwest, I should not have been surprised to see this weather transformation. Yet the beautiful, sunny morning had distracted me from the reality of our unpredictable climate. Gone were my visions of a bright Sunday afternoon, but thank God that He had not changed. The day at church was as wonderful as ever because of His faithfulness.
Many things in our lives change: fashions, technology, occupations, and, of course, the weather, just to name a few. It can be difficult to keep up with new trends and developments, and it can also be disappointing if we rather liked the way things were before. Yet, it is wonderful to know that in an ever-changing world, we have a God who does not change. As days, weeks, and years whirl by, we can find contentment and hope in knowing that our God is steadfast. He does not love us one day and forget about us the next, and He never goes back on His promises.
God’s Word is the same today as it was yesterday. Even if everything else in our lives is changing, He will be the one constant that we can rely on. What comfort that promise brings!
