Part of the Flock
For he is our God; and we are the people of his pasture, and the sheep of his hand. – Psalm 95:7
A couple of years ago, my husband and I had the opportunity to visit the country where I was born, Romania. One of the things that stood out to me while we were traveling from place to place was the flocks of sheep on the hillside. Often, we saw shepherds carrying lambs or just watching over their flocks.
It had been some time since I had been around sheep, so I was impressed by how peaceful and contented they were. I noticed that they stayed together; not one sheep seemed to get too far from the rest. Also, they did not fight for their food; not one of them seemed to want the grass that another was grazing on. Each appeared pleased and satisfied just to be a part of the flock.
Often, the beauty that surrounds us touches our hearts. As I watched the serene beauty of sheep grazing on the hillsides, I thought, What a great picture they paint of how the Lord would have us be as Christians! The many Bible verses that reference the Lord as our Shepherd and us as His sheep illustrate a beautiful message of love and joy in the presence of the Lord. We should be happy and content in God’s presence, just like sheep are in the presence of their shepherd. When the world looks into our churches, they should see people who love to be together, who appreciate each other, who have respect for each other, and who are peacefully doing their parts in serving the Lord. That attitude reflects our close relationship with the Good Shepherd, and it is something beautiful to see.
Is that the way we are today? Are we doing our part in serving the Lord in a peaceful and contented manner? David understood the relationship between a sheep and its shepherd, and wrote that we are “the sheep of his hand.” The Lord looks on us with much love and tenderness, and He wants us to be part of His flock, peacefully and contentedly doing our part for Him.
