Pray It Through

I love them that love me; and those that seek me early shall find me. – Proverbs 8:17

The countryside was showing off its majestic beauty as we drove up the rugged gravel road that led into the hills. Lovely wild flowers stretched lazily through the cracks in a weather-beaten fence, which traveled endlessly along the primitive route we followed. Occasionally, we saw a rustic barn in the distance sheltered by towering trees. We breathed in the pine-scented air, completely enthralled with the wonders of nature.

It was time to end our Saturday drive and return to our home in the city. My husband wanted to return at a faster pace than we had come, so he looked for a shortcut shown on our map. We continued on, looking for a road through the fenced properties. Finally, he was rewarded. The fence ended and a road led to a paved route. My husband had continued on until he had found what he was looking for.

Seeing that shortcut appear reminded me of how it feels when a long-sought answer to prayer finally arrives. Sometimes when we pray, it might seem that endless “fences” are blocking our way. There may be no solution in sight, and it can feel as though our prayers are having no effect. But that is no time to give up and turn back! Perseverance and a good map kept my husband going forward until he found what he was looking for, and that is also what we need in our prayer lives. Our map is the Bible, and if there is a promise for us there, we can keep seeking with confidence that we will eventually receive it.

Do we stop and give up before we have prayed a situation through? Do we ever make just a quick request to God, but then forget about it and try to work out the situation on our own? If we trust God and believe His Word, we will press on until we have found the way. Remember that God loves us, and keep seeking Him. The “fences” will eventually fall aside and the glory of the Lord will be displayed when the answer arrives.
