Ready or Not

Therefore be ye also ready: for in such an hour as ye think not the Son of man cometh. – Matthew 24:44

Since the 1970s, Dieudonne Wafula, a scientist in Goma, Congo, has been tracking the seismic activity on Mount Nyiragongo. Over the years, his monitoring equipment has been stolen and vandalized by rebels, but he has continued on in his work, knowing that his posted data could save lives in the event of an eruption.

The day came when Wafula warned authorities that the mountain was, indeed, going to erupt soon. Unfortunately, no one heeded his warning. Life went on without concern about the mountain’s rumbles. One week later, Mount Nyiragongo erupted, sending red-hot lava across forty percent of the town. Dozens were killed. Had Wafula’s warning been heeded, all those who were incinerated could have been saved.

Someday soon, the Lord will return for the pure in heart who are watching and waiting for Him. The warnings of this great event are recorded in the Bible and have been proclaimed down through the years by many faithful servants of the Lord. Are we ready? Do we have our lamps trimmed and burning? We are not able to stop and watch the sky unceasingly for the Lord’s return, but since we know He is coming, we should check our lives. Are we keeping the commandments, abiding in the Spirit, and being good stewards of what God has given us?

We also have a responsibility to warn others. Though we may be ignored, mocked, or even attacked, this message can save souls. The volcano claimed the lives of those on the streets of Goma, but eternal death will be the fate of those who have not prepared for Heaven. Even if only one person responds positively to our witness, it will be worth every effort.

Those who are not ready will be left behind. We can be wise and heed God’s warning by watching and praying always, and doing our part to tell others also. He will return, and it may be today.
