Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee. – Psalm 119:11
The sight took my breath away. Who had scattered this handful of “rubies” in the dewy grass to glisten in the early morning sunlight? Not since I was ten years old had I seen such large ones or any with such deep, true red. I knelt down for a closer examination before reaching to take the first one in my hand. They weren’t rubies, of course; they were wild strawberries, sweet and succulent. These were amazingly large.
On rare occasions in my childhood, we had found such fruit in an area of the woods where moisture, sunlight, and protection from hungry creatures cooperated to produce delightful berries. They were fruit fit for royal dining!
As an adult, I have fond memories of the exceptional and uniquely shaped wild strawberries. Domestically cultivated berries are good, but there is no comparison in taste. Alas, such delectable wild strawberries are so scarce that finding them is like discovering a treasure.
Have you ever felt you had suddenly discovered a treasure after finding an insight in God’s Word? Maybe in your devotions, you read a verse you’ve seen dozens of times, but on this day, God’s Spirit reveals a greater understanding or a new application to the familiar words. What a treasure! We want to hold these special blessings in our hearts and cherish them forever. Wild strawberries can only be enjoyed by eating them, and they are soon gone. But God’s Word can be hidden in our hearts and will last to help us in our daily walk with Him. Expect to find treasure today!
