The Bugler’s Dilemma
Therefore rejoice, ye heavens, and ye that dwell in them. Woe to the inhabitants of the earth and of the sea! for the devil is come down unto you, having great wrath, because he knoweth that he hath but a short time. – Revelation 12:12
Enemy armies surrounded the Emperor Napoleon, or at least that is how the story goes. Defeat was certain! So he called his bugler. “Quick, Bugler, we don’t stand a chance. Sound retreat!” “But Sir,” the bugler responded, “I don’t even know how to play retreat. I haven’t sounded retreat in my life!” “Well then, play something that sounds like retreat!” Napoleon commanded. So, Napoleon’s bugler sounded, “Charge!”
The enemy general, on hearing the bugle blast, cried, “Napoleon is charging!” He called his bugler, “Quick, Bugler, we don’t stand a chance against Napoleon. Sound, retreat!” And that bugler did know how to play retreat. So what would have been complete victory on the part of Napoleon’s enemies ended in defeat as they retreated in panic!
