The Glory of God
The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork. – Psalm 19:1
On dark nights out on our farm, we spent plenty of time looking at the sky. Some of my favorite memories are evenings when we came home from church in the dark, looking at the moon and stars as we drove the quarter-hour on country roads. When the moon was especially bright and no other cars were present, Dad could sometimes be persuaded to turn off his headlights, and we would drive for a while by celestial lights. Everything seemed quiet and peaceful when we did this; God was in control, and had prepared beautiful heavens for us to enjoy. We were even more excited on the nights when His show included the Northern Lights!
Consider the vast universe God created. Its fathomless dimensions extend on and on, with billions of galaxies and countless stars, comets, and black holes, all in their places. Mankind can only look on in awe as each newer, more powerful telescope reveals yet further discoveries. God is awesome!
Zooming in on our own galaxy, the Milky Way alone lays claim to around 300 billion stars. Constellations such as Ursa Major and Orion are collections of bright stars that seem to form pictures, which serve as a focal point for studying stars. Year after year, they are in the same formation. We stand amazed!
Still nearer to home, the Solar System is a collection of nine planets within the gravitational pull of “our” sun. The movements of each planet are perfectly ordered, never out of place. We can even predict when several planets will line up together, and we feel quite privileged to see it. What a beautiful array!
Down on terra firma, we are blessed with matchless sky shows each day that change from moment to moment. What an impressive sight God delights us with on a daily basis! Whether the weather is stormy, foggy, or brilliant sunlight, there is beauty in God’s handiwork.
If we were to continue zooming in, we would never cease to find marvelous new wonders. The Creation is a masterpiece, and it speaks volumes about the One who fashioned it. Let’s make it a point today to notice and ponder some aspect of God’s glorious creation. We will be blessed if we do!
