The Prayer of Faith Shall Save the Sick
Is any sick among you? let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord: and the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up. – James 5:14-15
When we arrived on the scene, my mother was lying on her couch, her right hand clutched to her heart, gasping heavily. She had always believed in divine healing, so we immediately put in a phone call to the church ministry. An old minister whom we had known for years came in a short period of time. He anointed her with oil from a small bottle he carried with him and prayed for her, according to the instructions given in our focus verse.
“There,” he said, “now she’ll be okay!” and made what seemed to me a very quick exit. “What is this man thinking?” I mumbled to myself. “Can’t he see that she is still gasping and can hardly catch her breath? Why, she has had a heart attack!”
Despite my feeble faith, she did recover. We took her into our home, where she lived a fruitful fourteen additional years, well into her eighties.
Then one evening, I heard my eldest daughter call from upstairs, “Daddy, come quickly! Something is wrong with Grandma!” I rushed upstairs just in time to hold my mother in my arms as she suddenly turned gray and her head collapsed on my chest.
We called 911 and a fire truck and ambulance sped to our home. The rescue workers worked on her in vain and then took her away with sirens screaming. Mother passed away that night, and because she had never been under a doctor’s care, an autopsy was performed. I do not recall the exact cause of death, but I still remember a statement at the end of the report: “Scars show that at some time in the past this woman suffered a massive heart attack. It is completely healed.”
How thankful I am that my unbelief did not hinder the prayer of faith made for Mother after her heart attack! That minister from fourteen years ago never claimed to have any special gift of healing, but he certainly knew how to pray a prayer of faith, and that was all it took. Just one person who will pray in faith believing can open the doors to the marvelous works of God!
