The Right Way
Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me. – John 14:6
There is a certain town that our family knows fairly well because we have visited it many times. It is easy for strangers to get lost in the town because it has so many confusing traffic patterns, and even we struggle sometimes at getting around there. We have learned that trying a new route or finding an unfamiliar destination requires a map.
One time, when my daughter was driving our car, she followed another car that we believed was going to the same place as us. We followed the car for several blocks, straining to see through less-than-perfect driving conditions. When the car took an off ramp from the freeway we were on, we dutifully followed, only to discover that we were going the wrong way! Thankfully, it was not too difficult to turn the car around and get redirected to our intended destination.
The situation made me think about how easy it is, as Christians, to find ourselves going the wrong way if we are following other people. Although it might seem easier to just follow others rather than to search out God’s directions for ourselves, it is not a good idea. Not everyone has the same goal as us, and anyone can make a mistake in their decisions. We need to know the way for ourselves.
We can be sure we are headed in the right direction by examining God’s Word and by following Jesus’ example. The Bible is truly a “lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path” (Psalms 119: 105). It will lead us to our eternal destination. We can find the answers to all our questions in that Book, and it will never misdirect us.
There are lots of roads in life, and the way can become confusing if we are unfamiliar with the territory. We need to get familiar with the territory! As we read our Bibles every day and spend time in prayer with God, we will better understand His will for our lives. Following Him will one day bring us to Heaven!
