This Is the Way
And thine ears shall hear a word behind thee, saying, This is the way, walk ye in it, when ye turn to the right hand, and when ye turn to the left. – Isaiah 30:21
Taking day trips in the beautiful valley we are blessed to live in, and wandering over the mountains on both sides, is a pleasure my wife and I always enjoy. The back roads are plentiful and the scenery ever-changing. The stress of everyday life seems to vanish and our spirits are renewed.
I used to feel it was impossible for me to ever become confused and lose my sense of direction. My, how times have changed! On many occasions in recent years, when it was time to head for home, I was sure I knew the way. Sometimes my wife would tell me I was turning the wrong direction, but since I was sure that I was right, we would drive until it was obvious the choice I made was incorrect. On more than one occasion, she would get the maps out and prove her point. Now when she tells me I am turning the complete opposite direction from what we should be doing, I listen to her. She has yet to be wrong!
During many years of serving the Lord, there have been crossroads and the need for God’s direction. Sometimes I made choices thinking the decision was obvious, only to learn I had made a mistake. How much better it would have been if I had taken time to consult God’s roadmap—the Bible. We may think we know what to do because we have been through a particular situation before, yet we still need to seek God’s will anew. Sometimes circumstances are slightly different than we realize, and God has a different plan for that instance. We will not go wrong if we ask God first and then make our choice.
In every decision we face, we need to take time to consult God and then wait patiently for His direction. God will guide us in the right way if we will just seek Him, listen for His voice, and obey the instructions He gives us.
