Hold up my goings in thy paths, that my footsteps slip not. – Psalm 17:5
Do you want to go on a ‘trust walk’?” I used to ask my childhood friend quite often. This usually brought a quick smile, and a ready assent. One of us would then close our eyes tightly as the other would lead the way, holding onto an arm. The leader would march the trusting friend around, saying things like, “Step up,” or, “Duck your head.” There was an unwritten rule that we would keep each other out of harm’s way.
Our Christian walk, in some ways, is like a “trust walk.” Though our eyes are not closed, we do not see nearly as much as our Leader, Jesus. He is faithful to lead us in the best path, and to keep us from harm. All we need to do is hold on to His hand, follow His guidance, and trust Him.
On our trust walks as kids, we sometimes found it amusing to trick each other. We might say, “Duck,” when there was no reason, just to make the other look silly. However, with Jesus, there is no trickery. He is not out to make us look ridiculous. He only has our best interests at heart. When He instructs us to do something, there is always a reason, and it is always for our good.
Although our trust walks had no specific destination, my friend and I enjoyed the time we spent together, walking side by side. Our Christian walk should be an enjoyable time as well, walking side by side with our best Friend. And this walk has a definite destination: Heaven.
Jesus sees the end from the beginning. He knows what will be coming into our lives in the future, and can steer us in the best possible way. We can certainly trust Him to lead us in the right direction, so we can safely reach our goal.
Lord, help me to trust You with every detail of my life. I know that You can see far beyond what I can see, and You will always lead me in the best path.
