Unlocking the Blessing
“If ye be willing and obedient, ye shall eat the good of the land.” – Isaiah 1:19
Our family was outgrowing the basement apartment that we rented from my mother-in-law. My husband and I wanted to buy our own home, but we did not know if it would be financially feasible at the time. As I thought about the possibilities of such a purchase, my mother-in-law was preparing to go on a trip. She was planning to be away for a few weeks, so she asked me if I would water her grass. Happy and willing to do her a favor, I said yes.
Every day, I set aside some time in the late afternoon to water the lawn. What I did not realize from the onset was that God would meet me in the yard. I assumed that I was just out on the grass to water it, but I soon found out that God had more in store for me. He used that time to speak to me and shared many things with me there. Among other things, He told me how He was training me for the time when I would take care of my own grass. I thought, My own grass? Owning a house had seemed impossible, but that promise from God was encouraging. And although we did not see the outward manifestation of our house immediately, it was on its way. Looking back, I realize that if I had told my mother-in-law I was too busy to water the grass, I would have missed the blessing of that special time with the Lord and the encouraging promise He gave me there.
At times God uses the simplest means to bring us to a place where we can hear Him, and where He can prepare us for spiritual growth. Our willingness to help others and our obedience to God’s leading can be the key to unlocking our blessings. His desire is to meet our every need, and all He requires is that we be “willing and obedient.”
