Psalms of Joy and
Praise
Bible Text: Psalm 8:1-9; 23:1-6; 96; 121
In the Bible there is a book called Psalms. It is filled with songs
of praise, worship, and thankfulness to God. King David wrote many
of these psalms. He started writing his songs when he was just a
boy.
Young David had been given a very important job to do. He took
care of his father's sheep. He spent many hours out on the hillsides
with his sheep. He knew just what a shepherd must do.
After David made sure his sheep were safe, he had time to do other
things. Often he spent his quiet time talking to God. He sang songs
that told just what he was thinking. He also knew how to play beautiful
music on his harp. David loved God and enjoyed singing songs about
Him.
One time David wrote a psalm about a special Shepherd—the Lord.
He said, "The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want."
David knew that God loved and cared for him, just as a good shepherd
loves and cares for his sheep. God wants to be our Good Shepherd
too. He knows whenever we need something, and He will take good
care of us.
Another of David's psalms says, "O Lord, how great you are!"
David knew that God had created everything. He enjoyed the world
that God had made. He was thankful that God loved him. God wants
everyone to enjoy the world He created, and He wants us to be thankful
for everything.
Other people wrote psalms for the Lord too. We don't know the names
of all of them, but one time someone wrote, "Sing a new song
to the Lord; sing all the earth!" The person who wrote this
wanted other people to sing and worship the Lord too. God loves
to hear us when we sing our songs of joy. It is a good way to tell
God we love him, and our songs can help other people to hear about
God.
There is another beautiful psalm that says, "My help comes
from the Lord." The person who wrote it knew that he could
sing even when he had a problem or was afraid. It is good to know
that if we are ever worried or afraid we can just ask God to help
us. This psalm tells us that God watches over us and will keep us
safe.
There are many ways we can tell God what we think and feel. David
and the other writers of the psalms chose to sing some of their praises
to God. And God loved to hear them sing their songs. These songs are
written in the Bible so everyone can know about God. They show us
how to talk to God and tell Him we love Him. God loves everyone and
He wants us to love and worship Him.
