Hempstead Church Kids’ Day

You have heard it said that kids will be kids, and the children in the Hempstead church are no different. As they move up in age and the toddlers join the older ones, the excitement gets passed along. While some adults did not take the announcements to heart, the children would not let them forget that Labor Day has come to stay as “Hempstead Church Kids’ Day.”  Some of the parents reported that their children could hardly sleep the night before, and some children woke up very early to let their parents know that they could not get to the park late.

During the planning stages, adults had volunteered to go to Kennedy Park in Hempstead early in the day to secure our favorite spot. They also helped with the shopping, and brought in the grills and other heavy items. In short, they did whatever needed to be done to make the fun complete.

As the children arrived in their colorful “Kids’ Day” t-shirts, they started with whatever their version of “fun” the park could offer. As soon as enough children were present, everyone gathered for the opening prayer, and Pastor Joseph Lamidi committed the day’s activities to the Lord.

One of the activities was an outreach, in which the Sunday school teachers and children went around the neighborhood in groups. As usual, the children did very well in greeting people and courteously handing out tracts. The teacher leading one of the groups said the Latino girls in his group did very well, not just in handing out tracts, but alsoserving as interpreters when necessary. He was proud of them.

As soon as the groups came back to the park it was time to begin the barbeque. As usual there was lots of food and drinks to choose from. Soon the games began. The pictures tell the story about some of the sports activities. There were prizes and medals for the winners. The children were not tired at all. There was good weather, plenty of food and drinks, enough space to run around, and more prizes to win…but one thing was in short supply. Time! No one had a means of adding more time, so eventually there was no choice but to stop for the day. After closing in prayer, the children sang “Jesus Loves the LittleChildren.” Then all the children received goody bags and everyone was dismissed, leaving the rest for the year 2010, if Jesus tarries.
