Newfoundland Youth Camp 2009

Coles Pond, Roddickton

July 27 – 31

Our 21st annual youth camp brought great anticipation and excitement to over one hundred campers and staff who converged at the Coles Pond Campground. Campers came from different locations throughout Canada, with three young ladies visiting from Norway. At the camp, the young people enjoyed a variety of different field activities such as mini golf, volleyball, and softball. Between all of this, campers partook of the wonderful meals prepared by the kitchen staff. We were blessed to have a dedicated group of workers who came to camp, not only to work, but to encourage and lend a listening ear to the needs of the young people.

The first chapel service Monday night began with the theme song “I Can Hardly Wait.” Campers sang with gusto. From the very first night there was a sweet, sweet Spirit in the place. We were on holy ground. It was a blessing to hear young voices praising the Lord! After a time of singing and testimonies, Scott Wells spoke about the two opposing forces that battle for our souls; Jesus and Satan. We need to obey the voice of God. Prayer followed with many kneeling at the altar.

After breakfast Tuesday morning, a presentation was given concerning the pros and cons of the internet. Comparison was made to an axe. When used properly it makes a great tool, but when used improperly it can do a lot of damage. Then, after a day filled with fun and excitement, campers gathered at the chapel for the best excitement of all. Psalms 122:1 says, “I was glad when they said unto me; Let us go into the house of the Lord.” Youth camp is no exception. The greatest moments at camp take place while campers are seeking God. Tuesday night’s message, given by Trent Newman, encouraged young people to seek God so they can be used to help fill in the gap.

On Wednesday night the campers were asked to recite the first and last verses of the Bible. After this, the point was stressed of making the most of our lives between our first breath at birth and our last breath at death. As in previous services, campers gathered to pray. Several throughout the week claimed salvation.

Thursday morning’s service began in the chapel. After a time of singing, campers were led outdoors. First, the group walked by a man who was standing by a tombstone, smiling. Then, as they went to the lakeside they passed a stretcher. At the beach a crutch was found. As it was picked up, a man came running out of the trees shouting, “I’m healed, I’m healed.” As the group moved on, another man stepped forward holding a flower as if he was seeing it for the very first time. As each item was explained, the campers began to realize what it might have been like to travel a road after Jesus passed by. Then as the crowd moved into the forest, a cross could be seen upon a hill. At this point the group recited John 3:16 before being dismissed with prayer.

After another fun filled day of excitement, campers enjoyed a barbeque supper before preparing for talent night. Campers, along with their counselors, were given the opportunity to exercise their many talents. The talent show consisted of songs, skits, recitations, and other activities to present the Gospel message. Many visitors were in attendance. It was a real treat to see the young people use earthly means to give spiritual points. The night ended with a fireworks display.

Friday morning before departure from camp, the campers were encouraged to keep on keeping on for the Lord. Campers getting saved and staying saved is what truly makes a successful youth camp.
