Friday Evening Bible Study

Tony Boyce, pastor in Dallas, Oregon, brought the Friday evening Bible study from the Daybreak and Discovery series. This week focused on Jeremiah chapters 30-33: The Consolations of the Prophet. These chapters recount God’s offer of consolation, or hope, even in the midst of pronouncing judgment upon Judah.

Brother Tony read the key verse, “For, lo, the days come, saith the Lord, that I will bring again the captivity of my people Israel and Judah, saith the Lord: and I will cause them to return to the land that I gave to their fathers, and they shall possess it” (Jeremiah 30:3). He stated that this took place during the last year of Judah’s existence as a nation. The Lord had pronounced judgment upon Judah and now it was coming to pass. In these chapters, God was offering them hope going forward. God had not forsaken them, even though it may have felt that way. He gave them opportunities, again and again, to turn to Him.

Even in Judah's sinful state, God offered hope if the people would repent. Chapter 30 lists numerous blessings the Lord had in store for them. These included: release from captivity into their own land; rest; freedom from fear; their incurable wound (sin) would be healed; the people would rejoice, be multiplied, and given honor; they would be governed by one of their own (the Messiah); and they would be acknowledged as God’s people. In chapter 31, God promised that joy would come, God would restore the land, the people could plant again, and there would be singing.

Chapter 32 describes the Right of Redemption. At that time, land was passed down from generation to generation as an inheritance. An uncle of Jeremiah had no heirs, so God instructed Jeremiah to buy the land from his uncle, as he had the right of redemption. Brother Tony compared this to God’s plan of redemption for mankind. This is God’s earth and He has the right of redemption for all He has created. Jesus paid the ultimate price--the redemption price--and now everyone has the opportunity to be a child of God through that redemptive act.

Finally, chapter 33 refers to the Branch of Righteousness, or Jesus, who will rule one day. Brother Tony reminded us that Jesus is the Perfect Sacrifice, the High Priest, and also the King. He said the God of the universe invites all to be a part of His kingdom, by repenting and receiving salvation.

Brother Tony concluded with Jeremiah 30:20-21. He assured his listeners that God’s promises are sure. God will be faithful, and will continue to look after those who follow Him.
