Friday Evening Bible Study

Linda Spinas (pictured above) gave the second Bible study from the Highlighting Our Heritage series, this one titled “Our Logo,” which is “Jesus, the Light of the World.” She opened with the key verse from John 8:12, “Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.” She stated that Jesus is the Light in a dark world, and that Light is present in the hearts of those who are saved.

When it came time to design a church logo, the phrase, “Jesus, the Light of the World” was chosen since it has been a focus of the Apostolic Faith work from its beginning. This phrase was first displayed on our church building at Front and Burnside in 1917, and the same phrase was displayed on the front of the tabernacle when it was built in 1921. In 1922, it was displayed on top of the church headquarters building at Sixth and Burnside in downtown Portland. For sixty years, until the headquarters was relocated to southeast Portland, the message was proclaimed from that location. Many troubled individuals, including some who were ready to end their lives by jumping off the Burnside Bridge, were drawn by that message to give Jesus a try. One week, seven such souls were saved!

After describing different types of light that provide comfort, protection, and warmth, Sister Linda stated that Jesus also gives comfort and protection as He lights our way day by day. She listed five names from the Book of John that refer to Jesus: Light of the world (John 8:12); Bread of life (John 6:35); the Good Shepherd (John 10:11); the True Vine (John 15:1); and the Way, the Truth, and the Life (John 14:6).

Sister Linda wrapped up the Bible study by reminding Christians that they are a "container" to shine the light of Jesus to others, and she encouraged everyone to keep their container clean and holy so that their lights will shine brightly.

The evening ended with a time of refreshments and fellowship.
