Friday Evening Youth Focus

The February youth focus began with a Mexican dinner of salad, taquitos, burritos, quesadillas, and delicious ice cream bars for dessert. Following the meal, several young musicians led the whole group in singing “We Believe” and other worship songs. Then there was a time for prayer requests before Ryan Erdmann led the group in prayer.

The study topic of the evening was 1 and 2 Thessalonians, in anticipation of the upcoming special meetings “Bible Bowl” that will cover those books. Erik Calhoun was the speaker and he opened by telling the young people, “Some of this information may or may not be used for questions in the Bible Bowl next weekend.” No doubt this was information they would be wise to take notes on!

The first portion of the teaching was an overview of the books, noting that they were written by the Apostle Paul around AD 51 to a church in Thessalonica, which was the capital of the Roman province of Macedonia. It is one of the few Biblical cities that is still inhabited today. An outline of each book was given and then Brother Erik noted a key point from each chapter. These were the points he highlighted: 1) The Gospel is something supernatural that changes your life; 2) Believers ought to walk worthy of God by living in a way that honors Him; 3) Christians should increase and abound in love; 4) A description of the Rapture of the Church, which was a new teaching for the Thessalonians; and 5) Though no one knows the day the Rapture will take place, God has told what signs will precede it. These were the key points highlighted from the second book: 1) The punishment of Hell is worse than anything else that could happen to a person and so it is critical to make Heaven; 2) A discussion of the Antichrist; 3) God will keep believers as they patiently wait for Christ.

Brother Erik reminded the young people to spend more time studying these books before the Bible Bowl, and then the session closed with an opportunity for all to pray.
