Praying in the New Year in India

From the Superintendent's DESK

Clark Wolfe of Portland, Oregon, and Charles and Antonia Schleicher of Madison, Wisconsin, are in India and attended the December 31 watchnight service at the headquarters church in Kaikavolu. They said the service was well attended with every chair filled and another fifty or so sitting on the floor.

The service began at 7:00 p.m. and included music and testimonies as well as a Scripture reading from Psalm 103:1-5 selected by the pastor, Rayudu Raju. At about 11:15 p.m., the congregation went to prayer, praying out the old year, and continued until just past midnight, praying in the new year. Following this, a cake was brought out and everyone enjoyed some refreshments as they wished each other a happy new year before departing for their homes around 2:00 a.m.

Despite being up late, everyone was back again a few hours later for the Sunday morning service at 10:30. This time there was standing room only with an additional few looking in from the outside.

After the service, the congregation gathered around the baptistery, and a ceremony was held for five young ladies who had asked to be baptized in water. Then everyone was invited to stay for the annual New Year’s Day feast.

Our India churches are scheduled to hold special meetings over the next two weeks. Please pray for these as well as for Brother Clark and the Schleichers who plan to travel to several of our church locations to attend services and Vacation Bible School activities.
