As we have therefore opportunity, let us do good unto all men, especially unto them who are of the household of faith. – Galatians 6:10
A full moon lingered high above the frosty haze, while the wind whipped with chilling force onto a group assembled in a school parking lot. Most people would probably not want to venture out on a night like this, but those gathered did not seem to mind the harsh elements surrounding them. They were filled with Christmas cheer and were preparing to share it with some who had little to be cheerful about. I was in this group of parents and students.
We left the school and traveled to a care center. Upon arriving, we sang in the halls as we walked to the dining area where we would perform. We watched the faces of the senior citizens and veterans light up as they heard the familiar carols telling of a silent and holy night long ago. Many of them joined in, and their voices raised the spirits of others around them. Soon, it seemed that everyone was singing of joy to the world and angels from the realms of glory.
No one minded that the notes were not always right, or that the voices were not the best the city had to offer. The residents were thrilled that someone had come to visit them and share Christmas through songs and carols. Some told us that they missed getting out to church and singing about Jesus’ birth. As we left, the staff said that a number of the residents had not had a single visitor come to see them. They were grateful that our school group had made this effort.
At this Christmas time, when so many activities are calling for our attendance, might we be able to stop and take time to share a few minutes of Christmas joy with a heart that is alone, or one who has lost a loved one this past year? The blessing of giving our time, a carol, a word of cheer, a smile, or a friendly handshake will be a gift cherished much more than anything bought at a store. Taking the message of Jesus’ birth and His wonderful love to the lonely will make the decorations and presents fade to the background. We will rediscover the true meaning of “giving” at Christmas as we rejoice and celebrate God’s wondrous Gift to the world.
