And they that be wise shall shine as the brightness of the firmament; and they that turn many to righteousness as the stars for ever and ever. – Daniel 12:3
When I was eight years old, my family and I were staying at a motel as part of our summer vacation. The swimming pool was full of water, but was unattended. During the day, I spent a lot of time at the pool, lying on my stomach on top of the diving board and looking down at the water and the objects floating in it, imagining all kinds of adventures.
One day I was playing there on the diving board, lost in my imaginary world. I didn’t pull myself back into the real world enough to remember that I was perched over eight feet of water. Instead of inching backward, I just hopped off the diving board right into the pool.
I didn’t know how to swim, and it was all I could do to push my head above water. When I went under the third time, I was still close enough to the surface that my hands could reach out, but I just couldn’t pull my head above the surface. I began getting tired and thought to myself, Now I’m going to find out what it’s like to die! Suddenly, my body was yanked violently above the surface. My older brother and his friend had come out of the gift shop several yards away and caught sight of my hand sticking above the water. My brother saved my life that day.
All around us, souls are headed to a lost eternity. Like my brother, if we see someone in physical peril, we want to help. And our desire to reach out and help lost souls is even greater! Sometimes we may not feel we are doing very much, but a few words or a kind deed can help people know that God cares for them. Why not reach out to someone who is lost today!
