For he saith to the snow, Be thou on the earth; likewise to the small rain, and to the great rain of his strength. – Job 37:6
Looking out of my car window in the church parking lot, I almost did not believe what I saw. It looked like a soft, white fog was gently descending through the night sky as the headlights of a truck picked up the reflection of millions of tiny, white particles drifting down to the frozen pavement. Excitement gripped me as I impatiently waited for my daughter to finish practicing for a candlelight Christmas service. Could it really be we would have snow for Christmas?
Parked under a covered area, nothing landed on my windshield that could lend credibility to the brief glimpse I had seen in the headlights. I leaned forward a little to get a better look at the area, glittering and sparkling under the glow of the parking lot lights. The child in me wanted to jump out of my car, to reach my arms up and feel those crisp flakes. However, I contained myself, not knowing what someone might think if they saw me!
As we were driving home, the snowfall was so thick that it started to pile up on the windshield wipers. My daughter and I delighted in the beauty of God’s marvelous work. I thought about how the Lord and Creator of all must have looked down on our city with all of us preparing for Christmas, and said to the snow, “Be thou on the earth.” And it was!
What a thrill it is to realize that our Heavenly Father can speak the words, and things will happen. Something as lovely as snow was an effortless act for Him. In fact, all of the promises that He gives us in the Bible can be fulfilled with just the utterance of His voice. At times, our human minds may fail to remember how easy it is for God to answer our prayers. Sometimes we forget to even ask for His help because we do not remember how easily He can undertake. Other times we might limit what He can do because we lack the faith to trust Him completely.
Today, as we think on the birth of Jesus and the joys of Christmas, we are reminded that the Lord who created all things by speaking them into existence, can answer our prayers in just the same way. As we pray and seek His face, “snow” can fall at His command.
