And thine ears shall hear a word behind thee, saying, This is the way, walk ye in it, when ye turn to the right hand, and when ye turn to the left. – Isaiah 30:21
Recently my brother and his wife visited their son, who is working temporarily on a construction project in Kauai, Hawaii. It was their first visit to this island and they were interested in doing some exploring during their ten-day stay, so my brother purchased a tourist map of the island.
When their son saw the map, he chuckled and informed my brother that he might not find it very helpful. He was right! When my brother and sister-in-law ventured out for a trip around the island, they discovered that the names on the street signs were often completely different than what was printed on the map. Clearly, the map was not a reliable resource when it came to finding their way around!
As we travel through life, there will be many times when we need guidance. Life is filled with decisions and choices. While some of these choices are inconsequential, many of them could have an eternal impact. How important it is to seek guidance from a resource that is unfailingly accurate, up-to-date, and reliable! Thankfully, such guidance is available. If we look to God for direction, He will provide it.
As Christians, we receive general guidance from the Word of God. As we study the Bible, read about the lives of godly men and women of old, and observe what kind of decisions led to happiness or heartache, we gain a basic understanding of God’s ways. This establishes a framework for obtaining specific directions in daily matters. We receive specific guidance from God by praying and seeking the leading of the Holy Spirit, understanding that this will never differ from the general principles which are developed throughout the Bible.
Following God’s guidance is not necessarily a guarantee of a trouble-free pathway, but following His guidance will guarantee that we arrive safely at our destination of Heaven! Today, are you looking for guidance on matters that could impact your spiritual life? Make sure that you look to God for direction. If you do, He promises to provide it!
