“Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you, and will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty.” – 2 Corinthians 6:17-18
In high school, I was asked to write a one-page essay on what a family is. I remember wondering how I could explain something so complex in one short page. I went over in my mind how a family is a home where love and care are shown toward each person it enfolds, where everyone is loved regardless of height, eye color, or personality. In my essay, I noted that every person in a family shares a special bond with each other, a kind of unity that ties each heart to the other, and when help is needed, a loving support group is available to lean on.
Glancing over this piece of history I had saved, I thought how sheltered I had been from the world of dysfunctional families. I realize now that many did not experience the precious bond I wrote about. Scores of homes have been destroyed by sin, yet I am thankful that it is still possible to have a blessed home when God is the head of it, and that mine was a wonderful example of a godly, caring family.
No matter what kind of childhood home we may have had, what a joy and a blessing it is to be a child of God. Families on earth may be torn apart or fail to uphold one another, but that cannot keep us from being a part of the marvelous family of God. When we give our lives to God, He becomes our Father and we are His children, and He is the most loving Father we could have. He sees and cares about everything that happens to us, and He is only a prayer away if we ever have a need. In His family, the other saints are our brothers and sisters. The unity we experience here cannot be found outside of the Gospel. We weep with those who weep and rejoice with those who rejoice. We bear one another’s burdens, pray for each other, and encourage one another along the way. We deal with each other with compassion and kindness because we all have the same goal—to make Heaven, and to help as many as possible be there with us.
While many may believe that a family is nothing more than a blood relation, as Christians we can set an example of what God intended a family to be. Thank God for this family!
