On Tuesday, December 5, seniors over age seventy from our Portland congregation had a great time sharing stories and enjoying the company of their peers. As the guests of honor began to arrive at the annual Senior Christmas Luncheon, the first order of the day was determining where to sit. In a way, it was just like finding a seat in church. Where did I sit during the last service I was in, and with whom? In the end, it usually ends up being the same pew and the same people. That may not be very creative, but it works!
The Fellowship Lodge was beautifully decorated for the occasion, and the tables had been set to perfection, with lovely lantern-themed centerpieces and matching napkins to top it all off. Pastor Dave Lambert and his wife, Sister Rosie, were great hosts. During the meal, Brother Dave called out the names of four winners of door prizes, which were really nice collections of goodies. With only four winners, the guests were glad the meal was not based on winners and losers! And oh, how happy they were as the food began to arrive.
Before eating, Nolan Roby blessed the luncheon with a special prayer. Then several servers (the under-age-seventy workers) delivered salads to start the meal. The main dish was Beef Wellington with gravy, accompanied by roasted potatoes and carrots on the side. When the meals arrived and were placed in front of each guest, they looked awesome and tasted even better! Every component was baked to perfection and was still hot by the time it arrived at the table.
At the beginning and at the end of the luncheon, the guests had the opportunity to acknowledge and applaud the great work of their servers and cooks. They were a busy bunch and certainly deserved to also enjoy a portion of the meal, albeit behind a curtain.
The Senior Christmas Luncheon is a much-anticipated part of celebrating Christmas each year, and it definitely exceeded all expectations with wonderfully delicious food, terrific fellowship, and good times with old friends. Gathering with God’s people is always a joy, especially at Christmas!
